“Here in Turnhout we would very much like to start what we call a ‘weekend school’: where you reach out to children in the fifth year of primary school, sixth year of primary school, first year of secondary school. So that at that age you already bring them into contact with professions, and in a way offer them role models to help them make a responsible choice for their secondary education.”
“Because in Belgium it is an increasing problem that young people leave secondary education without a diploma. They leave school early. And very often this has to do with the fact that they didn’t choose the right course of study, they didn’t choose a direction that suits them. And if you look a bit further back, you see that young people, children from more vulnerable backgrounds, are also not encouraged in primary school to choose certain fields of study in secondary school – they actually end up too easily in what we now call the ‘B stream’. And that is such a shame!”
Linked to the local network and local actions that we are developping in Turnhout under the wings of project Buddy Migrants, we dedicated a podcast episode to the topic of vertical and horizontal educational mismatch, educational inequality and challenges and opportunities and how a proactive intervention at the early age of 10 might lever the impact that we as a society need to safeguard the future of our next generation.
